Marine Technologies
Catalina Sea Ranch is developing its NOMAD buoy as a distinctive, one of its kind, Ocean Internet of Things™ Platform. It is bringing together inventors, scientists, researchers and corporations with multi-disciplinary perspectives of the marine environment to advance ocean research and develop disruptive products and services.
This unique platform will provide a cloud-based solution to enable remote, real-time environmental monitoring for advancing offshore aquaculture and marine spatial planning. It will allow taking a pulse of an area of the ocean to understand trends, anticipate problems and devise mitigation measures for immediate corrective actions. This capability will lead to sound regulations based on solid science.
Aquaculture husbandry metadata and analytics for predicting and producing higher yields will become extremely valuable as a competitive economic advantage. Because the aquaculture sector is young as compared with agriculture, it offers greater scope and scalability for producing higher marine crop yields from the innovations developed by low-cost billions of sensors and actuators connected to networks generating massive amounts of real-time data for predictive analytics.
Since aquaculture must increasingly augment agriculture's drought disadvantage driven by climate change, the data from the Ocean Internet of Things™ Platform will be increasingly more valuable. Furthermore, the majority of aquaculture future growth is projected to occur in offshore waters where Catalina Sea Ranch is developing such technologies.
